Self-isolation, social distancing, and wearing face masks in public spaces – we’ve all been forced into making some big changes lately, all courtesy of the latest pandemic, coronavirus.
It may well be that we have overcome the first wave here in the UK and although measures begin to relax and we boldly forge our way forward into the ‘new normal’, we can anticipate that the winds of change have not yet subsided and our boats will continue to rock daily. With this in mind, here are 4 facts we should remember about change:
- It doesn’t need our permission to happen;
- It doesn’t care about our goals or personal calendars;
- It doesn’t consider our needs or feelings;
- Will always happen, whether we like it or not.
While changes made to our lifestyle, workplace or environment might be out of our control, it doesn’t spell immediate disaster for us, because here are 4 more facts we should remember about change:
- It can be viewed as an opportunity – think about what we couldn’t do before that we can do now (e.g. spend more time with family, save money, go back to school).
- We can control how we feel about change – viewing change as an opportunity enables us to stay positive. We can allow change to pique our interest in all the possible positive outcomes.
- We can take control on the effect of change – we can make change work for us instead of against us by taking appropriate action.
- Change can build resilience – by embracing change, we make ourselves stronger and we become better equipped to deal with the uncertainties that life will continue to throw at us.
As such, I want to encourage all of us as a family to embrace change, whatever form it may take in our lives. Focus on the positive aspects of every situation and take responsibility for creating good outcomes. By doing this, we can transform ourselves from being in a state of survival into a strong, thriving community.
